Stornoway - a genuine great pop band, capable of turning bedroom angst into poetry and making the result sound like The Flying Pickets playing prime Belle & Sebastian. No hype and an almost heroic lack of attitude meant Stornoway stood or fell on their songs alone, and tall and proud they stood. Already the rest of the world is starting to wake up to their very obvious charms. NIGHTSHIFT, December 07
Girls, if your appreciation for beauty is big
enough, it will surely be crossing gender lines when you see Little Fish play. I saw them perform for the first time in London's swanky Cobden Club a bit too clean,
quiet and swanky for me. No problem! It took Juju 6.9 seconds, wearing a wife-beater
suggestively perked in two places, her brilliant vocals, wicked guitar playing
and hard accompanying drums to turn us all into a Sex Pistol.
Little Fish is musics missionary position and why theyre NOT on NMEs list of New Bands to watch in 2008 is beyond me. I would definitely make space for Little Fish.
From Jacksonville, Florida, United States
(Played @ The Jericho Tavern: 29 Jan, 2008)
Black Kids are Florida's biggest hopeful musical hurricane. As one of NME's bands to watch in 2008 - Black Kids justify the hype. Guitarist, singer and frontman, Reggie Youngblood has more than a great name. The band have definitely paid their dues on their long journey for overnight success. Don't miss this great band!
From Glasgow, Scotland UK (Played @ The Jericho Tavern 12 Feb, 2008)
As one of NME's bands to watch in 2008, Glasvegas have big shoes to fill but with the frontman and leadsinger, James Allan, they're doing a pretty good job meeting big expectations.
We can probably agree that there's not much depth to the snap, crackle and pop in Pop-music. That's not a bad thing but, I'd say that even the topic of love is too deep for the crushes, enfatuations and loveage of X-factor-Pop. However, writing about his life and singing with emotion, James Allan transcends to fill in the void.
Even NME's Tim Jonze fell in love with the band so much that he started an indie label so that he could release their first single - the gripping 'Daddy's Gone' - a story about an absent father. The single reached Number Two on NME's Tracks Of The Year list and makes me think of early pop Mandonna meets Morrissey.
