.......FEATURED SHOW - Gemma Hayes

Wednesday 10th September

Gemma Hayes

+ GUESTS

 Doors: 8pm

If Gemma Hayes could press rewind and start all over again - would she?

In the space of a few years, the Irish singer-songwriter found herself plucked out of obscurity, into the media spotlight. But under the glare she lost her muse and underwent another journey of self-discovery before emerging at last with a second album worth the wait.

Against her parents' wishes, Tipperary-born Gemma left university - and her job in a launderette - signed to a hip record label and, after a couple of well-received EPs, recorded magical debut album 'Night On My Side' in 2002. The debut won critical acclaim and was nominated for the UK's prestigious Mercury Music prize.

So she sat down to write her second album - but couldn't.

"Sometimes when you come off the road, you get the blues," says Gemma. "You don't know what on earth you're going to do with your life. I had that feeling for two years"

With the same determination that saw Gemma take a gamble in the first place, she rolled the dice for a second time.In the summer of 2004, Gemma cut herself off from everything familiar. And in a remote part of County Kerry she began to write – and slowly the songs came.

With a bunch of new tracks, Gemma headed to the sunshine of Los Angeles to record with drummer and producer Joey Waronker. Gemma wrote a wish-list of musicians to work with – Josh Klinghoffer (guitarist with PJ Harvey), Cedric LeMoyne (bassist with Remy Zero) and Roger Manning Jr (keyboardist with Beck) – she got them all.

Gemma was back – and with a stunning new album 'The Roads Don't Love You,' infused with Gemma’s knack for soaring melodies and unique lilting voice.

"All of us are trying to figure shit out all the time. This album is saying 'Look, I don't know what the answer is. And I don't care'".

Stornoway

STORNOWAY

StornowayOxford, UK

Stornoway - a genuine great pop band, capable of turning bedroom angst into poetry and making the result sound like The Flying Pickets playing prime Belle & Sebastian. No hype and an almost heroic lack of attitude meant Stornoway stood or fell on their songs alone, and tall and proud they stood. Already the rest of the world is starting to wake up to their very obvious charms.  NIGHTSHIFT, December 07

Right after Stornoway played their New Year's gig @ The Tavern, I ran into Ollie Steadman leaning over the Karaoke machine  downstairs and I asked him, "Are you going to sign up?" He said, "No, they don't have the song I want." He was looking for "My United States of Whatever." So, this link is for you - Ollie Steadman! And, for Stornoway, a big thank you for a great New Year's Eve 2007!

Little Fish

LITTLE FISH

Little FishOxford, UK

Girls, if your appreciation for beauty is big enough, it will surely be crossing gender lines when you see Little Fish play. I saw them perform for the first time in London's swanky Cobden Club – a bit too clean, quiet and swanky for me. No problem! It took Juju 6.9 seconds, wearing a wife-beater suggestively perked in two places, her brilliant vocals, wicked guitar playing and hard accompanying drums to turn us all into a Sex Pistol.

Little Fish is music’s missionary position and why they’re NOT on NME’s list of New Bands to watch in 2008 is beyond me. I would definitely make space for Little Fish.

Black Kids

BLACK KIDS

Black KidsFrom Jacksonville, Florida, United States

(Played @ The Jericho Tavern: 29 Jan, 2008)

Black Kids are Florida's biggest hopeful musical hurricane. As one of  NME's bands to watch in 2008 - Black Kids justify the hype. Guitarist, singer and frontman, Reggie Youngblood has more than a great name. The band have definitely paid their dues on their long journey for overnight success. Don't miss this great band!

Glasvegas

GLASVEGAS

GlasvegasFrom Glasgow, Scotland UK   (Played @ The Jericho Tavern 12 Feb, 2008)

As one of NME's bands to watch in 2008, Glasvegas have big shoes to fill but with the frontman and leadsinger, James Allan, they're doing a pretty good job meeting big expectations.

We can probably agree that there's not much depth to the snap, crackle and pop in Pop-music. That's not a bad thing but, I'd  say that even the topic of “love” is too deep for the crushes, enfatuations and loveage of X-factor-Pop. However, writing about his life and singing with emotion, James Allan transcends to fill in the void.

Even NME's Tim Jonze fell in love with the band so much that he started an indie label so that he could release their first single - the gripping 'Daddy's Gone' - a story about an absent father. The single reached Number Two on NME's Tracks Of The Year list and makes me think of early pop Mandonna meets Morrissey.
